For years now the region's biggest seafood festivals have all taken place in Manatee County with the most famous held next month in the historic fishing village of Cortez and another huge one returning later this year to Palmetto. But as anyone who has ever dined at Walt's Fish Market already knows, Sarasota also has a rich commercial fishing heritage. The Sarasota Downtown Merchants Association aims to showcase that legacy at the inaugural Sarasota Seafood & Music Festival.

The free event being held Saturday and Sunday in downtown's Five Points Park will offer a mix of fresh sustainable and indigenous seafood complemented by beverages and live music by many of the area's best acts. There will also be seafood cooking demos, fishing workshops, arts and crafts, educational programs and exhibits. Attendees can expect to find grouper, stone crabs, jambalaya, crab cakes, low country boil and other seafood dishes prepared onsite. …
