Just when Earthlings had gotten used to Pluto's demotion to dwarf planet, scientists are entertaining the possibility that the solar system has a ninth planet after all - a previously unknown Neptune-sized orb beyond the Kuiper belt. Astronomers are calling it Planet 9.

In a paper published in Astronomical Journal, California Institute of Technology astronomers Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown theorized that a planet in a distant elliptical orbit seven times farther from the sun than Neptune probably accounts for the weird gravitational effects that are being observed on dwarf planets and planetoids that can be seen.

Planet 9's existence can be only inferred from the behavior of these objects, so it remains a hypothesis until it is observed through a telescope. …
