PATERSON -- Thirty new firefighters joined the city Fire Department on Monday after a graduation ceremony marked completion of their training.

Another 19 recruits are set to begin training in February, officials said. Fire Chief Michael Postorino said the two groups would boost the total number of city firefighters to about 372.

"It is an unfortunate truth that our first responders are tasked with a monumental workload," Mayor Joey Torres said. "They put their lives on the line each and every time they get called into action."

A $7.9 million federal grant will pay for the salaries of the 49 firefighters during their first two years on the job, officials said.

Torres thanked Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr., D-Paterson, for his help in getting that funding for Paterson. …
