Mets Will Retire Piazza's Number

Mike Piazza will be the last Mets player to wear No. 31.

The Hall of Famer's number finally will be retired by the team on July 30 before a game against the Rockies.

Piazza, who will be inducted into the Hall on July 24 and will wear a Mets cap on his plaque, will be honored throughout the weekend set against Colorado from July 29-31.

"It's such a tremendous honor to have my number retired alongside the great Tom Seaver," Piazza said in a statement. "My time as a Met was truly special and I want to thank Fred [Wilpon], Saul [Katz], Jeff [Wilpon] and the entire organization for this incredible gesture."

The honor is a long time coming and will create a memorable July for one of baseball's greatest catchers. Piazza will become the second Amazin' to wear a Mets hat into the Hall, and he's the fourth Met to have his number retired. …
