UPMC intends to build a hospital across the street from Jefferson Hospital ("UPMC Seeks to Build Large Facility Near Jefferson Hospital," Jan. 22). First it has to get past the Pleasant Hills Zoning Board this evening, Jan. 26. It states the project is to serve the community and that jobs will be created.

I am a primary care physician in the South Hills. I have attended to my patients at Jefferson since 1993. I am a member of an independent group of physicians. We are not owned by UPMC, Highmark or any hospital system. Jefferson has served the surrounding communities well with the best interest of the people living there since 1973, when Homestead Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital closed.

First UPMC closed Braddock Hospital. Then it built UPMC East down the road from Allegheny Health Network's Forbes Hospital. …
