Hollywood Must Cast More Minority Actors in Starring Roles

For the second consecutive year, no people of color have been nominated for Oscar consideration in the acting category, where 20 spots, annually, are available. This lack of diversity in an industry where more than 40 percent of ticket buyers are people of color is confounding and disturbing.

Calls for a boycott of the Oscar presentations are gaining traction and will snowball if white celebrities jump on the bandwagon, as well they should.

Being a cinephile, normally viewing two new movie releases each week, I was dismayed when Will Smith ("Concussion") and Michael B. Jordan ("Creed") were not nominated for acting Oscars by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. (Mr. Smith's bid for a nomination may have been hindered by the uproar his Nigerian accent caused among Nigerian-Americans, who claimed it wasn't authentic, even though a dialect coach signed off on it. …
