Running Total Is Set to Hit Pounds 30million in 2016 ; ?as Thousands Sign Up for Annual Fun Race, Organisers Say They Expect to Reach Landmark Sum This Year

ORGANISERS of the Great Manchester Run expect the event's fundraising total to top Pounds 30m this year.

They calculate more than Pounds 4 million was generated for more than 20 charities at last year's event.

And if that figure is matched this year, it will take the total to more than Pounds 30m in just 13 years.

Each year, 40,000 runners challenge themselves on the race's 10k route through the city centre passing some of Manchester's most iconic locations.

Thousands have already signed up directly with charities for this year's run on Sunday May 22, where the 300,000th runner is set to cross the line, with thousands expected to decide to raise money for a charity after they have entered.

One of the causes who have benefited from the hard work and kindness, since the race began in 2003, is the Kirsty Club, set up by the late campaigner Kirsty Howard for the benefit of Francis House Children's Hospice in Manchester. She died aged 21 last October but the Kirsty Club will continue fundraising in her name.

The team will have 50 official runners on the start line and a number of ideas are being considered to honour her at the event.

Phil Taylor, Director of The Kirsty Club, said: "The people who sponsor The Kirsty Club team have enormously benefited Francis House Children's Hospice, which costs Pounds 4 million a year to run.

"It will be strange to stand at the start line without Kirsty as we have been together at the start for 14 years but it will also fill me with pride to see our team not only still together but growing as a tribute to such a marvellous girl. …
