aMUM who smuggled FOUR mobile phones into Strangeways in her bra has been locked up.

Rachael Simmons, 32, from Hyde, claims she became a mule after criminals who her son owed money to threatened his safety.

A judge at Manchester Crown Court accepted she had she been trying to protect the 'wayward' teenager - but jailed her for eight months after she admitted a charge of smuggling a prohibited item.

Simmons went to HMP Manchester at visiting time with a 'bulky' package hidden in her bosom. CCTV captured her sitting with a 'complete stranger' - named in court as inmate Kyle Daniels - before passing him a package which he hid inside his shorts.

Prison officers recovered the item, which turned out to be four 'mini' mobile phones, along with four USB connectors, wrapped in five layers of cling film.

Following her arrest, she told police that two young men had put pressure on her to settle a cannabis debt owed by her teenage son, who is currently serving time for an unconnected offence.

They had gone to her home, she said, gave her what she thought was just one phone, and told her to take it to a man wearing a red top.

She hid the package in her bra before handing it over to Daniels. …
