THE most movement a United man showed during the weekend defeat to Southampton came on the touchline.

Ryan Giggs was as animated as a traffic controller in the technical area, attempting to direct United towards the visitors' final third.

During a playing career in which second represented a bad season for United, the worst Giggs experienced under Sir Alex Ferguson was a sixthplace finish in 1991. His transition to player-coach in 2013- 14 coincided with the worst of his 24 seasons at United - and things have barely improved.

The more unstable Louis van Gaal's position becomes, the unlikelier it is Giggs will succeed him.

United's plan to ease Giggs into the managerial role in summer 2017 has been scuppered by Van Gaal's laboured second campaign. The club has had umpteen chances to dismiss the Dutchman, yet they have resisted, despite the option of Giggs switching seats in the Old Trafford dugout.

Jose Mourinho could parachute in and save the day for United but the board overlooked him again. With the exception of the Portuguese, there is a dearth of proven, available managers to choose from and the longer United dither, the weaker the football club becomes.

Giggs was championed as Moyes' successor by a blinkered Ferguson and the Scot would doubtless endorse him again. The Welshman has a unique understanding of United and helped the sleeping giant develop into a business behemoth during his playing days.

He would command immediate respect in the dressing room - where Ferguson opined his status was God-like - demand entertaining football and, given Giggs' own experiences at youth level, help rouse the club's flagging academy. …
