A Second for the Motion: Don't Buy Those Cute Bunnies

I would like to thank PG writer Linda Fuoco for her continued interest in the efforts of those of us in the trenches. Her article, "Thinking rabbits for Easter? Try chocolate," (South, March 16 ) offers readers valuable wisdom.

Sure, those baby rabbits look adorable in the pet store window, but, just like any pet, they grow up quickly and proper care requires a lot of time and money.

Last year, two weeks after Easter, an 11-week-old bunny turned up on my doorstep. I already had two rabbits that I absolutely adored.

They had both been abandoned by their previous owners and left at local shelters, presumably because they both have medical problems that require special diets and daily medication.

One has no front teeth and suffers from arthritis in one leg, the other has weepy eyes and cannot tolerate any foods with a high sugar content (such as traditional rabbit pellets).

As it turned out, this new little guy is perfectly healthy and is an absolute delight to be around. …
