Wine Finds: Whites from Portugal's Alentejo

For many years, Vinho Verde was about the only Portuguese white wine you could find in our market. Inexpensive (usually priced below $10), light and slightly fizzy, it's still the most widely available Portuguese white at area retailers. However, the selection of whites is starting to grow along with reds. Below are a single varietal wine and a blend from the well-respected Herdade do Esporo winery located in Alentejo, a large region in southeast Portugal that covers about a third of the country. Although best known for its full-bodied reds, Alentejo's whites are also gaining recognition.
