St. Louis Has Best Year for Job Growth since 2006

The St. Louis area added 5,000 jobs in December, capping its best year for job growth since 2006.

A new estimate from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that St. Louis gained 15,600 jobs last year, despite a choppy performance that saw job losses in April, July and November.

The monthly figures, including December's 5,000-job gain, are seasonally adjusted.

The estimate is preliminary, and the government's revisions can be large. A year ago, for instance, the BLS thought St. Louis gained 17,300 jobs in 2014; that was later adjusted to 10,700.

With the gain in 2015, St. Louis has now recovered more than two- thirds of the 82,400 jobs it lost during the recession of 2008-09.

The area needs to add 24,300 more jobs to return to peak employment.
