Church Organizes Water Drive, Will Deliver Bottles to Flint, Mich

A local church concerned about the water crisis in Flint, Mich., is organizing a water drive.

New Mount Zion Baptist Church, 2101 S.E. Indiana, will collect bottled water and deliver it to Flint the week of Feb. 21.

Lisa Davis, program director for the church, said she has been following developments about the crisis and hasn't heard of anyone in the area organizing a way to help out the people of Flint.

"I thought it'd be a good thing for us to do in Topeka," she said.

Flint is under a state of emergency because of drinking water found to contain lead, a neurotoxin linked to learning disabilities and behavioral problems.

In April 2014, the city switched its drinking water supply from the Detroit municipal system to the Flint River in a cost-saving measure, The Associated Press reported. …
