About 100 feet of Laidley Street must be replaced after a burst water line damaged the road last week. The frigid temperatures preceding last weekend's snowstorm likely led to a failing connection between two service lines, Charleston City Engineer Chris Knox said Wednesday.

When West Virginia American Water repaired the issue, workers found that the force of the break "heaved the roadway up, Knox said.

The water company contracted with Oval Construction of Charleston to repair the stretch of Laidley Street, next to Slack Plaza and the Transit Mall.

West Virginia American Water spokeswoman Laura Jordan said the concrete demolition is expected to wrap up Wednesday. Its replacement, she said, will be done in three sections, with the street portion to be completed by Monday, weather permitting. …
