Raccoon Bites Boy Walking to School

Article excerpt

ELMWOOD PARK -- A raccoon that attacked a 6-year-old boy as he walked to school Wednesday morning will be tested for rabies, the police chief said.

The child and his mother were going to Sixteenth Avenue Elementary School around 8:40 a.m., Chief Michael Foligno said. A witness told police that the raccoon ran across the street and jumped on the boy's back. The animal crawled over the boy's head and onto his face, biting and scratching him.

A man who lived nearby ran over and grabbed the raccoon off the child, Foligno said. The man picked up a stick and beat the animal to death.

The boy was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center with deep cuts, the worst under his right eye, the chief said.

Bergen County Animal Control will have the animal tested for rabies; the results are expected on Friday. …
