Article excerpt

Class AAA No. 10 George Washington got another double-double from junior Shi Banks on Thursday and held Charleston Catholic to single digits until the third quarter in getting a 51-23 win over the Class A No. 10 Irish at the Charleston Catholic Athletic Facility. Banks led all players with 14 points and 13 rebounds and also blocked four shots.

The Patriots (9-5) went on a 16-0 run from the middle of the first quarter until late in the second to put the game away before halftime, when the Patriots led 22-5. The presence of the 6-foot-3 center kept Catholic from threatening inside throughout the game, but Irish (5-4) guards could not make up for the offensive deficiency from the perimeter. Catholic was 2 of 20 from the floor in the first half and 3 of 33 through three quarters before GW played out the game by going deep into its bench.

Freshman guard Katy Darnell also scored in double figures for the Patriots, finishing with 10 points. Elisha Davis brought down 12 boards as well and led all players with five steals.

Raegan Palmer led Catholic with 11 points.

St. Albans 48, Spring Valley 46: Katelyn Fields hit a shot at the buzzer to give St. Albans a come-from-behind victory over host Spring Valley. Haleigh Legg scored 11 points, and Alli Johnson netted 10 for the Red Dragons (6-6), who trailed 32-18 at the break. Jaida Adkins led the Timberwolves (9-5) with 12 points.

The win was critical for St. Albans' hopes of returning to the Mountain State Athletic Conference Night of Champions, set for Feb. 20. Spring Valley entered the game in third place in league standings with SA in fifth, behind Hurricane. The Dragons are now 6- 2 in conference play. The Timberwolves dropped to 5-1 in the conference, and Hurricane is 4-1.

Roane County 43, Ravenswood 35: Lucille Westfall tallied 21 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks as Roane County held off visiting Ravenswood. Mary Westfall added nine points, seven assists and eight steals for the Raiders (13-2). Claudia Cubides led the Red Devils (4-13) with eight points.
