Girl, 15, Dies in Wreck on Rice Mine Loop

A Northridge High School student was killed in a morning crash on Rice Mine Road Thursday.

Victim Ariel Sharee Backstrom, 15, was the passenger in a 2004 Mazda 6 driven by Brianna Hyche, 16.

Witnesses told police that Hyche was traveling east on Rice Mine Loop Northeast under the Woosley Finnell Bridge when she lost control of the car and struck a 2014 Mercedes GL 450 that was traveling west.

The impact caused the Mazda to turn cross-ways in the road before it was struck in the passenger side by a 1999 Honda Accord that was behind the Mercedes, said Tuscaloosa Police spokeswoman Lt. Teena Richardson.

Both girls, 10th graders at Northridge High, were unconscious and transported to DCH Regional Medical Center. Backstrom was pronounced dead. Hyche was in critical but stable condition Thursday afternoon, Richardson said. …
