The adage that "you can do anything with a bayonet except sit on it" is being played out in the northeast corner of Iraq, an arena with a complex mixture of religions and tribal agendas.

U.S. Special Operations forces will be embedded in forward Iraqi military outposts to support the recapture of Mosul from the Islamic State group.

The plan also proposes to work with the Kurdish peshmerga, which have a better combat record but also have an agenda to establish an independent Kurdish state -which brings the United States into conflict with Turkey.

U.S. forces will also be tasked to train Syrian Arab refugees to join the fight against the Islamic State group.
