A Dunbar Creek feeder stream was guaranteed long-term protection last week when the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth ministry donated a conservation easement to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy.

The easement covers stream frontage near State Game Land 51 and the vernal stream's confluence with Dunbar at Betty Knocks Road in Fayette County.

The Sisters' 32-acre retreat is closed to the public, but Conservancy land protection manager Jane Menchyk said the easement will insure that the tributary will always feed cool, clean water into Dunbar Creek.

"The Sisters wanted to preserve the forested hillside so there's no further subdivision on this property in perpetuity," she said. "This easement provides protection of wildlife habitat, connectivity to the surrounding gamelands and contributes to maintaining water quality in the Laurel Highlands. …
