Overloaded Circuit Sparks 3-Alarm Fire in Passaic Attic

PASSAIC -- A three-alarm fire caused by an overloaded electrical circuit in an attic apartment that may have been illegally occupied caused extensive damage Saturday to a 2 1/2-story wood-frame house on Meade Avenue, authorities said.

A dozen people were displaced, but there were no injuries.

The city Fire Department received an emergency call at 2:49 p.m. and arrived two minutes later at 15 Meade Ave., where firefighters found that flames had crept between the building's wallboard finishing and roof decking, Battalion Chief Chris Szczygiel said.

Firefighters from Passaic, East Rutherford, Wallington and Carlstadt knocked down the fire before it could move from the attic to the lower floors, but not before it "completely burned off" the attic, Szczygiel said.

The second floor suffered heat, smoke and water damage, while the first floor and basement both have water damage, he said. …
