Mahwah Police Charge 2 Brothers in Robbery Attempt

MAHWAH -- Two brothers from Newark were arrested Saturday morning and charged with attempted robbery after one of the men told a cashier at a deli on Route 17 that he had a gun and then demanded money, authorities said.

Jermaine Andreas Kelly, 39, and his brother Tyree Kalief Kelly, 37, entered the Quick Stop Deli on the northbound side of Route 17 and, after walking in and out of the store several times, offered to trade a cellphone for some items, according to a statement issued Saturday by the Mahwah Police Department.

The cashier there told police that he refused the offer, at which point Jermaine Kelly put his hands in his pockets and said, "I have a gun, give me your money or I'll shoot you."

The cashier indicated that all the money was with the gas station attendant working outside, according to the statement. …
