Chelsea Transfer Big for Clifton's Miazga

Matt Miazga wanted to play soccer in Europe as soon as possible. On Saturday, he got his wish.

The Red Bulls announced they completed the transfer of the Clifton native to Chelsea of the English Premier League, fulfilling Miazga's desire to play against some of the world's top competition.

On its website, Chelsea announced Saturday it had signed the 20- year-old center back to a 4 1/2- year contract.

The Red Bulls reportedly received a $5 million transfer fee from Chelsea.

Miazga, a Red Bulls Academy product who signed a homegrown contract in 2013, was heading into the final year of his deal. The Red Bulls risked losing him for no compensation if he left the team after this upcoming season.

On a conference call Saturday, Red Bulls sporting director Ali Curtis said the team tried to sign Miazga to a multi-year contract that would've made him a designated player, but Miazga declined. …
