Bravo for Jaap van Zweden. The Dutch conductor has just been named musical director of the New York Philharmonic. Whatever winning combination of talents he possesses, we're glad he has them. Manfred Honeck, music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, was the other top contender for the position. We're very glad that Pittsburgh still has him.

From the moment he took the helm of the PSO in 2008, Mr. Honeck and Pittsburgh have made beautiful music together. The native of Austria is not just an impeccable musician and world-class conductor; he also mixes personal charm and humor with a common touch. If he were a cafe in Vienna, he'd be described as Gemtlichkeit, the German term that roughly translates as a place of good cheer. …
