New Trash Collection Increases Recycling

Residential recycling in Cranberry has skyrocketed since the township changed its trash collection system, officials told township supervisors March 3.

Officials reported that 98 percent of residents are using their new recycling carts and recycling the items the township has added to the list, such as cardboard, newspapers, and magazines. Under the old garbage collection system, about 57 percent of the homes participated in the recycling program.

Based on the first quarter of the new system, 7,970 tons of garbage was disposed in landfills compared with 10,443 tons for a like period under the old system. Less garbage in the landfill means household waste is being recycled.

Beginning Nov. 1, one hauler, Vogel Disposal, of Mars, began collecting all trash, including recyclables. …
