Draft Budget to the Contrary, Tax Increase May Not Happen

Mt. Lebanon School District Finance Director Jan Klein said the administration and school board were trying to come up with a 2005- 06 budget that does not include a millage increase, even though the base budget draft of about $66.4 million, which it unveiled last week, would require a minimum 0.48-mill hike.

"The goal of the board is to come as close as possible to a zero- mill increase," Klein said Monday during a board budget discussion. "The base budget likely will change."

The board, however, continued Monday to discuss a list of increases to the budget and whether they were worthy of funding. Among the items questioned was the restoration of 23 percent of the number of summer workers and the hiring of three full-time custodians.

Board members asked Facilities Director Gerald Ingram to provide figures to show whether these additions will save the district money over time. …
