HARRINGTON PARK -- The Fire Department has applied for a $1.48 million federal grant to replace an aged ladder truck and turnout gear for the 45 active members of the department, 1st Lt. Jesse Barragato said.

The ladder truck is 21 years old and has an electrical problem in the turntable.

Barragato said that "everybody is cautiously optimistic" about getting the Assistance to Firefighters grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The department is requesting $850,000 for a truck with a 100-foot ladder, reaching 25 feet farther than the one on the current truck and useful for taller buildings.

Repair costs can be more than $18,000 for older, custom-made parts, said Barragato, adding the repair costs will get more expensive if the truck is not replaced. …
