DUMONT -- A 45-year-old man, who allegedly had been drinking, was injured when his pickup truck was struck and spun around by a freight train early Sunday, police said.

Nicholas McKay of Dumont underwent surgery Sunday at Hackensack University Medical Center after the accident, which took place on the CSX railroad tracks near Niagara Street, south of West Madison Avenue, Dumont Police Lt. Vincent Tamburro said.

At 12:30 a.m. Sunday, the Police Department received numerous reports of a vehicle on the tracks. The responding officers heard an oncoming northbound freight train, and when they arrived at the scene they saw the passenger corner of McKay's Toyota pickup "protruding over the western rail," Tamburro said.

The train "struck the vehicle, causing it to spin, rotate on its side and come to rest against a tree," Tamburro said. …
