Ginsberg Awards Celebrate Verse at College

The Poetry Center at Passaic County Community College held its annual Allen Ginsberg Poetry Awards Reading Saturday, honoring the work of poets from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania -- even Petaluma, Calif.

"Every poem read today should be considered a major accomplishment," Maria Mazziotti, the center's executive director, told the 70 people gathered at the Hamilton Club in Paterson. "Today is a celebration of what Allen Ginsberg stood for. It was hard to make a distinction between the first-, second- and third-place winners and those who received honorable mention."

Lisa Coll Nicolaou received one of the first-place certificates. Her poem, titled "My True Religion Is Kindness," came from a quote by the Dalai Lama. The Fair Lawn resident described her experience putting pen to paper.

"I was with a group at a writers' workshop," Nicolaou said. …
