HAVING brought in stars such as Kurt Gidley and Tom Lineham and with Chris Sandow bedding in after his mid-season arrival last year, it was largely because of their attacking threat that many pundits have been tipping Warrington Wolves to reach the Super League play- offs in 2016.

However, it was their defensive efforts that caught the eye when they ran out narrow victors over treble-winners Leeds Rhinos at Headingley in the season opener and coach Tony Smith was full of praise for the Wolves' heroics at the back.

"[The defence was] outstanding - and it needed to be. It got tested," said the former England boss. "They threw some at us and we threw some ball at them, but they just dominated in terms of territory and field position and ball.

"I think they had about 60 plays more than us in the game and they had 40 more than us at one stage in the first half. …
