Forget an 'Oyster Card', You May Be Using Your Watch to Buy Tram and Train Tickets!

RAIL passengers could eventually buy and use train tickets just using their watches, under plans for a high-tech northern answer to the Oyster Card.

Transport bosses - currently drawing up plans for a huge overhaul of the region's railways - say the north deserves a more advanced version of London's ticketing system. That could include using smartwatches, as well as mobiles and contactless debit cards.

In the coming weeks, Transport for the North - the body of northern councils overseeing the upgrade - will announce its timetable for the first phases of its pan-northern smart ticketing system, intended to make using the railways simpler and unclog the M62. Officials say they want to use the latest technology, rather than simply aping London's Oyster Card.

That did not necessarily mean a card of some sort had been ruled out, but that a range of other options were also being looked at, with phone handsets and the latest forms of 'wearable gadgets' in the mix. …
