According to news reports out of Harrisburg, members of the state House Game and Fisheries Committee met Monday to chew over House Resolution 61 -- a measure that takes aim at hunting weapons.

The proposal, put together by a group of Lehigh Valley Republicans, calls for a study to determine whether we all might be safer if deer hunters were limited to using shotguns.

No more rifles.

As reported in The Morning Call in Allentown, the study is being pursued in the aftermath of a Nov. 30 hunting accident in which a woman was struck in the head by a bullet while sitting in her car in the driveway of her home in North Whitehall.

Eighteen-year-old Casey Burns, who was seven months' pregnant at the time, survived -- as did her child -- but she has not recovered all of her cognitive skills and has little short-term memory.

She does, however, remember what happened in court March 2. That's when she confronted the hunter accused of firing the shot and asked him whether he was sorry for what happened.

Craig T. Wetzel, 46, said nothing.

"I can't apologize for something I ain't sure I did," Wetzel told The Morning Call reporter Christian Berg in his first interview since the incident. "If I was 100 percent sure, I'd have sent her flowers and everything."

Wetzel admits that the ballistic evidence points to him. And he was hunting in the orchard out behind his home when Burns was shot. And he did fire his rifle at a six-point buck that stepped out of the corn. And, according to investigators, "The trajectory of his shot was directly in line with the location of the victim."

But he had every right to be hunting where he was. …
