Code violations have become so prevalent in Turtle Creek that the borough council wants to hire a part-time ordinance officer.

But an emergency sewer repair might derail the plan.

The borough had to hire a hydrologist and sewer contractor over the weekend to repair a 24-inch sewer main that blew open and created an 18-foot-deep, 25-foot-wide crater on Maple Avenue.

"It may blow out our budget," council President James Currie said at Monday's meeting. "I agree we need an ordinance officer, but we don't know what the bill's going to be for Maple Avenue."

No one knows why the sewer failed, but Councilman Ted Czekaj noted that the terra cotta pipe is probably between 100 and 150 years old.

The break was discovered when effluent backed up into a basement in the 900 block. …
