Peters Effort Recycles 86 Bikes for Charity 86 Bicycles Rounded Up for 3 Charities

The organizer of a bicycle recycling effort has described the June event in Peters as an overwhelming success that provided 86 bikes to three charities.

Bill Shader, a former member of the township's environmental quality board and an avid cyclist, organized the bike collection as part of the township's recycling collection.

He got the idea from a similar bike recycling effort in which he has participated in Pittsburgh.

Shader and three of his cycling buddies planned to collect the old bikes and renovate them to give away to charity.

But many of the 150 bikes collected were in such good shape they needed only to be dusted up and have their tires filled with air.

Some bikes were nearly new and included expensive trail and racing bikes, Shader said. …
