NEWARK - Fittingly, it will be two goaltenders who help the Devils kick start their four-day celebration of Martin Brodeur's career prior to this afternoon's game against the Washington Capitals at Prudential Center.

When Brodeur drops the puck for the ceremonial opening faceoff, each team will send out its goaltender to take the draw instead of a skater.

"I have never taken a faceoff. I've always wanted to, though," said Cory Schneider, who will start for the Devils today after sitting out Thursday's game in Toronto while nursing a minor injury.

Braden Holtby, who with 31 wins is on pace to break Brodeur's single-season record of 48 from 2006-07, is expected to start for the Capitals.

"I met Braden Holtby over the All-Star weekend, so I'm familiar with him," Schneider said. "If it is me and him, I'll have to get low and bear down on the draw."

Schneider is one of 14 current Devils who played with Brodeur and has an appreciation for all he accomplished in a career that will no doubt land him in the Hockey Hall of Fame when he becomes eligible in 2018.

"I tried to pick up something from every guy I played with and he was absolutely the best that there's been," Schneider said. "It will be great to be part of the ceremony and to watch him because he deserves every single thing he's getting this week."

The Devils are pulling out all the stops in honoring Brodeur, a four-time Vezina Trophy winner, three-time Stanley Cup winner and the NHL's all-time leader in wins (691) and shutouts (125).

The biggest moments will come Monday with the unveiling of Brodeur's statue and Tuesday night with the retirement of his No. 30.

After Schneider was acquired in a draft day trade with Vancouver, he spent the 2013-14 season sharing the Devils' net with Brodeur. It would be Brodeur's 20th and final season with New Jersey before he moved on and played seven games with St. …
