For the past five years, Serra Catholic has dominated the PIHL's Class A ranks.

The Eagles have played for the Penguin Cup in each of the past five years, winning four.

But this year Quaker Valley has emerged as a most legitimate contender to end the Eagles' run.

They finished just a point behind Serra for the top seed in the 12-team postseason tournament and have defeated all three of the teams with whom they share a first-round bye -- Serra, Bishop McCort and Sewickley Academy.

"We have the opportunity to go back to Mellon Arena. That's been our goal," said Quakers coach Kevin Quinn.

The Quakers advanced to the Penguin Cup semifinals last year, which were played at the Igloo, and the championship final will take place there again on March 22.

"With what we lost this year, a lot of people didn't think we'd be there. But we've proven them wrong," Quinn said. "We're a team to be reckoned with."

What Quaker Valley lost was an outstanding senior class, including high-scoring stars Sam Hairston, Ben Herring and defenseman Jeppe Boldsen. True, standout junior Furman South did return, but the Quakers nonetheless had a varsity roster that had a definitive green complexion with 10 freshmen and three sophomores.

But as things have turned out, those ninth and 10th graders were something special.

Freshman forward Michel Lemieux, nephew of Penguins legend Mario Lemieux, contributed a fine back-handed shot and the ability to slink to the net that countered nicely with South's "bull-in-a- china-shop" approach.

Freshmen Cody Scott and George Jackson and sophomore Breton McNamara gave Quaker Valley a solid second line with the ability to put the puck in the net.

And goalie Zach Zinger, also a sophomore, pitched eight shutouts and put up the best stats in Class A with a 1.44 goals-against average and . …
