CRIMINAL JUSTICE

BRADENTON -- The former deputy chief for the Bradenton Police Department was found guilty of one count of theft and acquitted of another after a bench trial this week in Manatee County.

Judge Lee Haworth announced the verdict Wednesday after hearing evidence regarding allegations that Warren Merriman III took advantage of his position to steal time and services from the city and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Merriman had waived his right to a jury trial.

Merriman was terminated from the Police Department in January 2015.

Haworth determined that Merriman committed theft in February 2014 when he was paid by the Pittsburgh Pirates for two hours - at $35 an hour - that he did not work at an off-duty security detail at McKechnie Field. …
