My Old Pal's Little Girl Is Now Leading Fight against Malaria

IF only I'd known when I went to Sydney a couple of months ago.

It turns out that one of my former college pals has a daughter who works at Sydney University and is at the forefront of developing vaccines for dangerous diseases.

Jim Williamson and I shared a house with three other lads when we were all trainee teachers in the early 70s and we had a great three years studying hard and not going to pubs at all.

Now Jim's little girl Alice has become Dr Alice Williamson and is renowned across the globe as a specialist in malaria.

She's part of the Open Source Malaria Group, trying to find a new treatment before strains of the parasite that resist existing medication reach Africa.

Dr Alice is also one of the leading scientists looking for a vaccine for the Zika virus which is in the news so much at the moment.

She also has her mum and dad's strong principles as she seems more interested in scientists finding cures and solutions rather than the constant search by corporations for patents which make drug companies billions. …
