Facebook Post Leads to Finding Woman | Daughter Grateful to Man Who Spotted Her

NORTH PORT -- It started with a Facebook post and ended with a missing 82-year-old woman being returned to her family.

Now, Rod English is being hailed as a local hero.

English, 61, was watching Super Bowl 50 pregame coverage Sunday afternoon when he started scrolling through his cell phone. Minutes later he was out the door.

A post on the North Port Police Department's Facebook page reported that a woman suffering from dementia was missing from her home on Royal Palm Drive. She was last seen near Bobcat Trail, a little less than a mile from English's home on Kowal Avenue.

English got into his pickup and patrolled the area around his neighborhood.

"I just have a soft spot in my heart for elderly people, and especially the ones with dementia or Alzheimer's," he said. "I've been going to the nursing home to see my mother since 2011."

English found Patricia Nelson in about 10 minutes, on the sidewalk on Bobcat Village Center Road. He recognized her immediately from the Facebook post description, wearing a burgundy sweatshirt and using a walker. …
