In the rubble of a demolished hospital wing, Sarasota Memorial Hospital leaders asked about 100 guests Thursday to envision a 74,000-square-foot, five-story rehabilitation tower.

At a groundbreaking ceremony for the $50 million rehabilitation pavilion project scheduled to open on the main campus of Sarasota Memorial Hospital in December, leaders painted a picture of a warm and inviting wing of the hospital where injured patients can gain back the skills they may have lost.

The 44-bed tower will have inpatient and outpatient treatment, and each floor will have a mock apartment where patients recovering from strokes, falls or

other traumatic injuries can practice day-to-day skills such as cooking, moving around furniture and getting in and out of the bathtub or shower. …
