Ati Vows to Fight Labor Practice Complaint

Allegheny Technologies said Thursday it will fight a complaint filed against the Pittsburgh specialty metals producer by the National Labor Relations Board over the lockout of 2,200 members of the United Steelworkers union.

The federal agency said in December it would file a complaint alleging the company engaged in unfair labor practices related to the lockout, which began Aug. 15 after the company and union failed to reach agreement on a contract to replace one that expired June 30.

A USW spokesman said Thursday the union will not comment on the complaint until its attorneys have reviewed it.

An NLRB hearing is scheduled for May 23 in Pittsburgh, the agency said.

In a statement, Allegheny Technologies said it believes the work stoppage is legal and that it has bargained in good faith. "This is the beginning of a potentially lengthy legal process that, including appeals, could take years to resolve," the company said. …
