Mall of the Future a New Parkway Center May Rise from the Rubble

The dormant Parkway Center Mall would be the perfect location for a movie - a post-apocalyptic movie.

The vast, sprawling acres of buckling parking lots surround an empty, three-story, 500,000-square-foot modern building. It's a wasteland, save the efficient Giant Eagle supermarket that hangs on its edge and still draws shoppers with the words "We're open" painted on its side.

But this mall, opened in 1982 and closed in 2013, has an advantage over other abandoned shopping meccas on the aptly named website deadmalls.com: It's in a great location.

The mall and the few buildings nearby are just one and a half miles from the Point in Downtown, and there is a ramp from the Parkway West that takes motorists directly to the property. Despite that invaluable advantage, earlier revivals have not come to be. …
