Exonerations Show Why Pa. Must End Its Death Penalty

Recently the University of Michigan Law School, home to the National Registryof Exonerations, announced that more people were exonerated in 2015 than ever before, including some from death row. The report notes that nationally, we"average nearly three exonerations a week, and most get little attention."

The reasons for these Pennsylvania wrongful convictions are ugly - more than 40capital cases have been overturned, or re-prosecution barred, because ofprosecutorial misconduct. More than 145 have been overturned because of defensecounsel's ineffectiveness. And let's not forget the false confessions, use of jailhousesnitches, police withholding exculpatory evidence and the use of junk science.

Despite all of this, district attorneys continue to seek the death penalty and ourlawmakers cling to it. …
