"The 33" ** (PG-13; 2:08) * The fact-based tale of trapped Chilean miners would seem to have all the elements for a fascinating movie danger, suspense, family and political drama but it turns out to be a textbook example of "the Hollywood treatment." Antonio Banderas and Lou Diamond Phillips make the most of their sketchily written roles in a film that's disappointingly formulaic. (Calvin Wilson)

"Black Mass" *** (R; 2:02) * With dead, cold-blue eyes, Johnny Depp's James "Whitey" Bulger is a man with neither soul nor conscience. Based on the nonfiction book "Black Mass: Whitey Bulger, the FBI and a Devil's Deal," the film is also about FBI agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton), a childhood friend of Bulger's who thinks he can leverage their relationship into success for himself.
