PATERSON -- Firefighters battled frigid temperatures as well as flames in dousing a three-alarm blaze near Route 80 early Saturday that displaced more than 50 people but caused no injuries, Deputy Chief Pablo Del Valle said.

The initial call of a fire in a three-story residential building at 477 Main St., near the interstate, came at 1:45 a.m. Firefighters arrived to heavy fire, which they were able to contain, Del Valle said, but the building eventually collapsed.

The exit from the westbound lanes of the highway to Main Street was closed for much of the day Saturday, before reopening in the afternoon.

The American Red Cross reported that it had helped 10 families comprising 53 people with emergency assistance, finding them temporary lodging, food and clothing. …
