WPX Lays off 60, Offers to Relocate 35

OKLAHOMA CITY (JR) - WPX Energy announced Wednesday it will lay off 60 employees from its Oklahoma City office. The driller offered 33 employees options to relocate to its Tulsa headquarters and two employees options to relocate to its Carlsbad, New Mexico, office.

The company said it has about 1,000 employees.

The decision wasn't easy and is the result of low commodity prices, WPX spokesman Kelly Swan said. The layoffs and relocation offers directly affect former RKI Exploration employees, he said. WPX bought privately held RKI in July.

"That was not the plan when we acquired RKI last year," Swan said. "Commodity price conditions have deteriorated since we acquired them; oil was trading at $60 per barrel then."

Laid-off employees are eligible for severance packages ranging from six weeks to one year, based on how long they worked for the company. …
