"Independent Lens: The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution," 9-11 p.m., PBS. Writer director/producer Stanley Nelson has a long history of chronicling the African-American experience for PBS in films such as "Freedom Riders" and "The Murder of Emmett Till." For his latest project, Mr. Nelson trains his camera on the Black Panther party and explores its significance in the broader American culture and its role in African-American culture and politics.

At a January PBS press conference, Mr. Nelson said the Panthers' militancy was calculated and designed to scare off a portion of the public and to draw in others. Jamal Joseph, a former member of the Black Panthers, agreed.
