Teachers Take Shot at Golf ; Golf: Teachers Receive Start-Up Kits from Capitol Federal to Help Students

Shellie Stahly had never played golf before Wednesday morning, but you never would have known it by watching her send a ball sailing during the Midwest Golf in Schools program training session for local teachers at Washburn Rural High School, 5900 S.W. 61st.

After receiving instruction from Jeff Burey, director of the Golf in Schools Program operated by the Professional Golfers Association Midwest Section, Stahly -- a physical education teacher at Pauline Central Elementary School -- carefully positioned herself and her club before whacking a soft practice ball with her club.

She sent the ball off the folded-up bleachers in a Washburn Rural gymnasium, where the training was taking place.

The 20 or so other teachers on hand for the event, who formed a semicircle behind Stahly, broke into a cheer as the ball she hit caromed off the bleachers.

Burey, of Overland Park, who narrowly missed being hit by the fast-moving ball, then gave Stahly a little more instruction, advising her to hit the ball a bit more softly the next time.

After taking her turn, Stahly said she was "excited" about bringing the game of golf to her young charges at Pauline Central Elementary School.

That was the goal of the teacher's training on Monday -- a teachers' in-service day, meaning students had the day off.

Physical education teachers in grades kindergarten through 12 from both Auburn-Washburn Unified School District 437 and Shawnee Heights Unified School District 450 were on hand for Monday morning's session.

Jared Goehring, Washburn Rural golf coach, said the training program on Monday was designed to give teachers some of the basics of golf and equip them to introduce the game to their students.

In doing so, he said, it was hoped the training might get students excited about playing golf, as well as learning the life lessons it entails, such as patience, perseverance and integrity. …
