Topeka High School Sports Notes: City Schools Head to Regional Wrestling ; Peterson: Seaman Swimmers Eye Title

All seven city schools will compete in regional wrestling tournaments this week, vying for state berths.

Hayden will compete in a Class 4A regional Friday and Saturday at Smoky Valley, while Highland Park, Seaman, Shawnee Heights and Topeka West will take part in a 5A regional on Saturday at Bonner Springs. Topeka High and Washburn Rural will compete in a 6A regional on Saturday at Wichita North.

Also competing in the Smoky Valley 4A regional will be Abilene, Buhler, Chapman, Clay Center, Colby, Concordia, Goodland, Hays, McPherson, Nickerson, Smoky Valley, Rock Creek and Wamego.

The city's four 5A schools will be joined in regional competition at Bonner Springs by the host Braves, KC-Washington, Lansing and Leavenworth.

Topeka High and Washburn Rural will compete in the 6A regional at Wichita North with the host Redskins, Free State, Junction City, Manhattan, Wichita East and Wichita Southeast.

The top four regional finishers in each weight class will advance to state on Feb. 26-27. The 6A and 5A tournaments will be held in Hartman Arena at Park City while the 4A tournament will be held at Salina's Bicentennial Center.

- Shawnee Heights' wrestling team has topped the 100-win mark for dual victories under T-Bird coach Chad Parks, who took over the program in 2005.

The T-Birds have posted a 103-55 record under Parks.

- Seaman 2015 graduate Valeria Rivera, now wrestling at Ottawa University, competed in the Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association nationals at Oklahoma City.

Rivera posted a 2-2 record wrestling at 101 pounds, finishing one win away from earning All-American status.
