Male Athlete of the Week: Lucas Keh of Nv/demarest

Lucas Keh won the 200 individual medley, took second in the 500 freestyle, and swam a leg on two first-place relay teams as NV/ Demarest captured its fourth consecutive state sectional title Friday.

Although he helped the Norsemen edge Teaneck, 91-79, to claim that North 1, Group C crown, The Record Male Athlete of the Week couldn't have dreamed of such success just a few years ago.

Keh sustained a ruptured spleen and a torn labrum in a car accident June 27, 2012.

He was returning home from swimming practice and some of his friends in the car also were injured. A few of them are now NV/ Demarest teammates.

Keh doesn't remember much about the accident that left him unconscious.

"The ruptured spleen was probably the worst thing because the doctors wouldn't allow me to move," the junior said. "It was just agonizing to not be able to do the things I wanted to do."

During the five to six months he was out of the pool and on bed rest, he debated whether to quit swimming.

"I made a decision that even though the sport came with failures, it came with successes, and I just want to keep pressing toward the thought of possibly getting better," Keh said. …
