WAYNE Rooney insists the criticism being directed at manager Louis van Gaal is down to the players underperforming.

And the United captain believes it's the squad rather than the manager who should shoulder the blame for what is turning out to be a poor season.

Rooney admitted after the 2-1 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday that it will now be 'difficult' for United to finish in the top four and qualify for next season's Champions League.

And he says the players have 'got off lightly' while Van Gaal has taken most of the heat from fans.

He said: "At times, it's been frustrating for us as we have underperformed.

The manager has taken a lot of stick for some performances.

"It's down to us, we're players and we have to perform. …
